Manchester United are going to sign 18-year-old defender Mason Holgate for £1m, according to the Yorkshire Post.
The Red Devils should hold off Aston Villa and Swansea City, who re also interested in Holgate.
Barnsley starlet Holgate began his first senior season with the League One club in 2014 after being brought up through the youth system.
Holgate made 20 appearances for Barnsley while scoring one goal for them, as they finished in 11th place in the 2014-15 League One standings.
Meanwhile, Man United are looking to shore up their defence after a season of struggles in that area.
They finished in fourth place in the Premier League standings, and they are aggressively pursuing star defenders such as Sergio Ramos and Nicolas Otamendi as a result.
The Red Devils have already signed defender Matteo Darmian, and they are bringing in youth with the cheap signing of Holgate.
Although Holgate will be hard-pressed to break into the Red Devils first team, he will bring depth and potential for homegrown talent.
