United are understood to be looking to make a number of signings as Louis van Gaal looks to strengthen his side for an assault on the Premier League title next season.
According to Daily Express, United are planning on using Liverpool target Javier Hernandez and right-back Rafael as bait in a deal for Gaitan.
Gaitan has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent months, and Van Gaal is hoping to get a swap deal completed to bring the Argentine to the Premier League.
Neither Hernandez or Rafael played a major role last term, with the former spending a majority of the season on loan with Real Madrid.
United are expected to complete the signing of Torino defender Matteo Darmian within the next 24 hours and it is believed Rafael will become surplus to requirements.
The Brazilian lost his spot in Van Gaal’s starting XI to Antonio Valencia last season and would certainly struggle to crack the team due to the arrival of Darmian.
