Van Gaal’s squad is undoubtedly lacking a quality striker to compliment Wayne Rooney, and it could well be his priority heading into a busy stretch of the transfer window.
The Dutch tactician will want to get it right, and here are seven options that may well tempt him to delve into the deep pockets at Old Trafford.
Robin Van Persie is set to leave Manchester United this summer, and so coach Louis van Gaal has a hole to fill in his frontline ahead of the new season.

7. Alexandre Lacazette
With Lyon signing Claudio Beauvue, it has cleared the way for them to sell their in-demand striker. Lacazette was the top scorer in Ligue 1 last season with 27 goals, and United aren’t the only side to be linked with a move this summer.
It is a risk as the transition could mean some teething problems early on, and so it leaves the Frenchman last on our list.
6. Romelu Lukaku
The Everton striker has shown he can perform when given a starting role in the Premier League after successful stints at West Brom and at Goodison Park.
However, the question remains as to whether or not he is good enough for United. The Belgian international would certainly be a real presence up front, and his ability to be a target man, run the channels and link up play could make him an ideal target to play alongside Rooney.
5. Harry Kane
Kane exploded last season after an impressive campaign with Tottenham, but unfortunately for the north London club, that has in turn opened up speculation about his future.
The England international wouldn’t be the first man to make the move from White Hart Lane to Old Trafford, and given that he is still just 21 and can strike up a real partnership with Rooney at both club and international level, it could be a smart move.
