Anthony Martial Man United squad number
According to ESPN, United were in talks with the Bundesliga giants during their dealings over the Adnan Januzaj loan move.
However, while they were interested in signing Reus, they were put off by the valuation and have been forced to look elsewhere.
The Red Devils are insistent on adding another forward to their squad ahead of the 6pm deadline, with Anthony Martial set to join from Monaco in a deal worth £36m.
While that will be a welcome boost for Louis Van Gaal, it is thought that he wanted Reus and the club were willing to go up to £50m to sign him.
That is no longer a possibility now, and so it remains to be seen if the Dutchman does bolster his squad any further as he continues to face fierce criticism from fans and experts alike.
Wayne Rooney will continue to be relied upon heavily this season, as it is unlikely that United will be able to sign any more big names with just over an hour remaining until the window closes.
