Manchester United were prepared to pay £50m to sign Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus, according to reports.
According to Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils were keen on signing Reus as part of a deal for Adnan Januzaj, but the Bundesliga club set an asking price of £60m for the star attacker.
The report suggests United were not willing to match Dortmund’s valuation of the player and instead shelled out £36m to sign AS Monaco youngster Anthony Martial.
Reus was heavily linked with a move away from the Westfalenstadion during the summer transfer window, with both United and Arsenal reportedly keen on the 26-year-old.
The German international has also been linked with a move to Barcelona, with the Catalan club understood to be keen to land the former Borussia Monchengladbach man when their transfer ban ends in 2016.
It remains to be seen if United to head-to-head with Barcelona over the signature of Reus in 2016 having already spent big money during the summer window this year.
