Manchester United did not come out of the summer transfer window with what fans had in mind, as they failed to make a megastar signing such as Bayern Munich striker Thomas Müller.
According to The Metro, the Red Devils’ efforts to sign the German superstar saw them make a whopping £88m offer for German international.
It has also been rumoured that Man United boss Louis van Gaal was hoping to sign the 26-year-old to a deal that would tie him to Old Trafford until 2020.
If the bid was accepted by the Bundesliga giants, it would mark a world-record transfer fee.
This record is currently held by Real Madrid’s £85.3m acquisition of Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur.
Despite Man United’s furious efforts to acquire Müller in the summer, Bayern Munich maintained the star striker is not for sale.
The German may become a target for Man United in January, as the Red Devils are reportedly keen to add another striker to its squad.
19-year-old Anthony Martial made a excellent debut with a goal in the Red Devils’ 3-1 win over Liverpool, and Van Gaal may now steer clear of splashing big money on Muller.
