GK: David de Gea
It is still unclear as to whether the Spaniard makes an immediate return to the line-up now that the transfer window is closed, but if Van Gaal wants to win trophies this season, then de Gea needs to come back into the fold as soon as possible.
However, much depends on his frame of mind and if he is genuinely committed to helping the club for the rest of the season.
DF: Matteo Darmian
Darmian produced another impressive display for Italy earlier this week, and he will be looking to continue his good form for United down the right flank.
DF: Chris Smalling
United showed their first signs of a defensive wobble last time out in the loss to Swansea, but it would come as no surprise if Smalling bounced back with a commanding display.
DF: Daley Blind
Marcos Rojo will surely be knocking on the door with a bit more conviction after the Swansea defeat, but back Van Gaal to keep Blind in the side as he will want his fellow Dutchman to help dominate possession at home.
DF: Luke Shaw
If it isn’t broke, then no need to fix it. Shaw will continue at left-back.
