Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has been confirmed as the Red Devils’ top target, but they are also prepared for him to sign elsewhere.
If they are forced to come up with a Plan B, Man United will take a look at Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.
“Yes we are interested in Morgan but no deal is imminent,” a prominent Man United figure said, according to the Daily Star.
The Red Devils are expected to bid in the range of £20m for Schneiderlin in the opening bid, and the French international has already admitted that he would prefer to play in Old Trafford.
He has also been pursued by Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. Southampton is making an effort to re-sign Schneiderlin, as they are reportedly offering him a £60,000-per-week contract.
However, Schneiderlin leaving the Saints is all but a done deal. This may be Man United’s only option since Bayern Munich will be reluctant to sell Schweinsteiger to a rival team.
Either way, it looks like Man United will be able to beef up their midfield depth, which will be necessary as they search for a long-term replacement for 33-year-old Michael Carrick.
