Alderweireld’s switch to Spain could see Demichelis head to Eastlands.
New Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has been given renewed hope in the pursuit to sign Atletico Madrid centre-back Martin Demichelis from the club, just two months after the Argentine signed, reports the Telegraph.
Demichelis played under Pellegrini at Malaga last season and then made the move to Atleti on a free transfer this summer.
However, the Chilean wants the 32-year-old to switch to Eastlands as the coach tries to plug gaps left at the back due to injuries to captain Vincent Kompany and impressive youngster Mateja Nastasic.
Demichelis wants to reunite with the 59-year-old, but Atletico are demanding £5m for a defender that cost the club nothing just two months ago.
Whilst City are unwilling to pay this, the 2012 English champions still believe they can land their man as the La Liga outfit look to bring in Ajax star Toby Alderweireld.
Although the Eredivisie holders have already rejected a bid from Atleti for the Belgium international, Diego Simeone’s side are expected to come back with an improved offer.
This development would mean that the Argentina international is not so vital for defensive cover at the Vicente Calderon Stadium and Demichelis could then make the move to the Etihad Stadium.
The Citizens have previously looked into trying to sign Portuguese international Pepe from Real Madrid, but the Spanish giants were not open to letting the 30-year-old leave.
With Kompany expected to spend a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Pellegrini could do with this mater being sorted sooner rather than later.
