Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has defended his new signing, report the Mail, with the Chilean having dismissed talk of Frank Lampard being a traitor to former club Chelsea after agreeing to join the current Premier League champions on loan.
Lampard has arrived at Eastlands on loan until January after signing permanently for MLS expansion side New York City FC, City’s sister club, who do not join the MLS until next season – kicking off in the spring.
This has given the opportunity for Lampard to join City to keep sharp ahead of his next move, but some Chelsea fans have been unhappy that their all-time top goalscorer will be turning out for another Premier League club.
This has been dismissed by Pellegrini, however:
“Frank Lampard was a free player so I don’t understand the reaction of Chelsea fans who say he is a traitor because he is not at Chelsea.”
“The problem was not that Frank Lampard didn’t want to sign another contract with Chelsea, Chelsea didn’t want him any more. He wants to continue playing and he is a good player and very important for our team.”
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has also raised concerns about Lampard’s controversial move, suggesting that it may be a way for City to contravene Financial Fair Play regulations by having a player’s wages subsidised by New York City.
