Former champions are keen to strengthen at the back this summer.
Manchester City are on the verge of sealing a surprise transfer for Toluca defender Diego Novaretti at the end of the season, according to reports in the Daily Mirror.
The big-spending top-flight giants are determined not to make the same mistakes in the transfer market this summer that they made last year, when their failure to bring enough quality new players to the Etihad stadium having just won their first-ever Premier League title allowed city rivals Manchester United to steal a crucial early march on them in this season’s title race.
However, City head coach Roberto Mancini has already begun plans to bring several new players to Eastlands when the transfer window reopens on June 1, although the name of Argentinian centre-back Novaretti will be a surprise to many of the club’s fans.
The 27-year-old, who is out of contract this summer and so will not cost City anything in transfer fees, spent six seasons with Club Atletico Belgrano in his homeland, before joining his current employers in Mexico.
