Manchester City could be set to deal a major blow to their bitter rivals Manchester United with a late swoop to sign Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria, according to the Sunday Times.
The Premier League champions have made a formal approach to the Argentine wide-man and asked him to delay any decision to complete his proposed £64m move to Old Trafford as they look to raise funds to complete a deal for him themselves.
To meet Uefa’s Financial Fair Play regulations, City will have to bring in about £50m in transfer funds from player sales, and will look to offload Alvaro Negredo among other big names in order to bring in Di Maria ahead of their local rivals.
This will be the latest in a number of blows in the transfer market for United, who have struggled once again this summer to sign the players they want.
