The second match of the Ryan Giggs era as Manchester United interim manager ended in a loss to Sunderland as the Black Cats continued their miracle quest for survival.
Gus Poyet’s side took the lead in the first half through Sebastian Larsson, who shot from the centre of the box after Connor Wickham provided a fine pass from out wide.
Although the Red Devils had an hour of play to try to find the equaliser and – ideally – a winner, Sunderland defended extremely well, and Man Utd were unable to break them down.
The difference between the teams was the taking of their chances.
Sunderland scored their only shot on target from a total of eight efforts on goal, while Man Utd hit two shots on target from 17 attempts, finding the back of the net with none.
The Black Cats could yet avoid relegation given their remarkable form.
