Wayne Rooney opened the scoring before Robin van Persie netted, but the Hammers pulled one back through Diafra Sakho and then Rooney was sent off for the hosts.
This is how the Red Devils rated:
1. David de Gea – 6
The goalkeeper actually had little to do until West Ham scored through Sakho and he made another sharp save from a shot from the striker late on.
2. Rafael – 7
A much better display from the Brazilian compared to the 5-3 defeat to Leicester City and the right-back setup Rooney with a fine ball.
33. Paddy McNair – 6
The 19-year-old made his debut for United and looked assured on the ball although showed his inexperience when the East Londoners scored.
5. Marcos Rojo – 6
As the only fit senior centre-back there was a lot of pressure on the Argentina international who played solidly, although panicked at times.
3. Luke Shaw – 6
The £27m summer signing from Southampton finally made his debut for his new club and linked up well with Angel di Maria.
