The 27-year-old Benfica midfielder is expected to be brought in by Man United after they ship Nani over to the Primeira Liga club with cash.
Gaitan did not receive much playing time this season, as he only started in seven games.
He participated in five UEFA Champions League matches while starting an international match for Benfica.
Although Gaitan did not score in either of these matches, he scored two goals in an international match for Argentina.
Man United is looking to gain youth, as star players such as Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie are either already in their 30s or approaching that point in their careers.
Although they have begun their mission to add midfield depth, the question of whether goalkeeper David de Gea will stay in Old Trafford looms over the team’s heads.
