Manchester United make early statement with stunning transfer bid for former Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas.
Manchester United will look to sign FC Barcelona playmaker Cesc Fabregas this summer, report the London Evening Standard – but Arsenal could yet hijack the deal themselves.
The Gunners have first option on any future transfer deal for Fabregas, and should Manchester United have a bid accepted, Arsene Wenger would also have the option of matching it and giving the player the choice of returning to his former home in north London.
Fabregas has not performed as well as he might have liked back at Barcelona, but still has scored 10 goals and provided 11 assists in his 27 La Liga starts for the club.
Few footballers are so creative from a central position, and having also been deployed in a false nine position and on either wing this season, Fabregas has added versatility to his game.
He is also already well accustomed to the English Premier League, and the physicality would be unlikely to phase him.
Manchester United will reportedly spend big this summer in order to send out a message.
The Evening Standard report that in order to give new manager David Moyes the best start possible, he will be given the funds to buy marquee players such as Fabregas and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo.
Arsenal have a chance to stop that though, and buying back Fabregas would make a statement of their own.
“I’m not convinced that he will not one day come back here because he is a real Arsenal man,” said Wenger when queried on Fabregas.
“He loves Arsenal, he watches every Arsenal game.”
