Red Devils targeting Borussia Dortmund ace.
Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus, one of the most coveted players in European football, has a release clause.
“Marco Reus possesses a release clause option in his current contract at our club,” Dortmund executive Hans-Joachim Watzke was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.
“He could leave our club due to that.
“He is, however, the only player in our first-team squad that has such a contract clause.”
Premier League trio Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United are all keen on the 24-year-old, according to ESPN.
Whilst the Gunners have the advantage of a German trio already at the club – Per Mertesacker, Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski – it is United that have the ace up their sleeve.
The English champions bought Dortmund favourite Shinji Kagawa from the Westfalenstadion in 2012 after the Japan international had helped guide the club to successive Bundesliga titles.
Since arriving in Manchester, the Japanese has failed to settle and has previously admitted that a return to Germany would be an appealing prospect.
“Someday I want to return to that team [Borussia], I will be back someday…. if Dortmund is okay with it,” the Japanese star was quoted by the Independent.
However, Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp dismissed the notion of a swap deal with Reus after speaking to Kagawa about a return to Dortmund.
“[Coming back] is not an option for him this year and not an option for us,” Klopp was quoted by Eurosport.
“This was made obvious quite quickly.
“Shinji wants to prove himself at Man United this season. I didn’t think the response would be any different but better safe than sorry.”
Yet The Times claim that Dortmund would consider a swap deal, with Kagawa heading back to Germany and Reus going to Old Trafford.
The attacker’s current deal runs out in 2017, but if the £29m release clause is met then the German’s departure could be a lot sooner.
