The Dutchman has led his side to six wins in a row in the Premier League, with some impressive results against Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Manchester City along the way.
A bigger test now lies in store for the Red Devils as they travel to Jose Mourinho’s in-form team, but van Gaal has suggested that it is still possible for a late twist in the race to be crowned champions this season, though he did concede it was unlikely given the gap in points between the two clubs even if United were to win this weekend.
“It’s still possible, I’ve said that before. It’s not logical, but it’s possible,” he is quoted in the Daily Mirror.
“It’s more ‘when’ and ‘if’, and I don’t believe in ‘when’ and ‘if’, I believe in facts.
“The fact is that we are behind Chelsea. But we have to play against them and so do Arsenal, so we can lay pressure on Chelsea’s shoulders. You never know, you’ve seen it in previous Premier League seasons, so I cannot say it’s not possible. But it’s not logical.”
United will be delighted to be even thinking about the title after last season’s horror-show in finishing 7th, as well as after a slow start in the league this term.
