Arsene Wenger’s men were two goals up after just seven minutes thanks to Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, while the Chilean ensured that the hosts took a 3-0 lead into the half-time interval with his second of the game.
Although United settled in the second half and provided more fight to at least attempt an improbable comeback, it still wasn’t enough to recover from their disastrous start which ultimately resulted in just their second defeat of the campaign.
The Red Devils had the opportunity to top the Premier League table with a win, but instead allowed Arsenal to leapfrog them into second place with Manchester City leading the way with a two-point cushion over both clubs.
The international break arguably comes at the wrong time for Van Gaal who will want to get a reaction from his players as soon as possible. However, he will now have to wait until October 17 when his side travel to Goodison Park to face Everton in what will be another tough away fixture.
