The pair know each other from van Gaal’s time as Holland manager. The 22-year-old was a key part of the Netherlands’ run to the semi-finals in Brazil.
Martins Indi nearly made the move to Old Trafford in the summer, but ended up at Porto in a £6 million move. Apparently van Gaal’s insistence that he find out what he already had at United was part of why the deal went sour.
The Dutch ace is thought to be available for £10 million, meaning Porto could make a tidy £4 million profit over five months.
The Red Devils are in need of defenders following a summer where veterans Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra, and Rio Ferdinand all left the club. Potential replacements for the trio Jonny Evans, Phil Jones, and Chris Smalling have not stepped in to their places as many hoped.
New signings Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw have also failed to fill the gap since arriving at Old Trafford.
