Red Devils set to wrap up move for Gunners star.
Manchester United are said to be on the verge of agreeing a deal to sign Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen, according to the Daily Star.
Reports close to the player are suggesting that a financial package between the player and the interested club has already been agreed with just the finer points of the arrangement left to be ironed out.
Vermaelen has seen himself go from club captain in north London to benchwarmer over the past season and new United boss Louis Van Gaal is said to be keen to offer the Belgian international a way out.
United are keen to bring him to Old Trafford as they lost both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic at the end of last season, meaning that defensive reinforcements have been given top priority during the transfer window.
And with Vermaelen not playing at Arsenal and having just a year left on his contract, the move looks to be a perfect fit for all three parties.
It is believed that the fee to take Vermaelen to the northwest has been set at £11m to convoke the Gunners to let him leave.
If he does sign, he will be the club’s second defensive signing in the space of a week after they landed the signature of Southampton’s Luke Shaw.
