Manchester United may have won the race to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels with a helping hand from rivals Liverpool, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Red Devils have long been linked with a move for the German international, who celebrated a World Cup victory with his country this summer, and it may now be that he is set to complete a £20m move to Old Trafford due to Dortmund being offered a suitable replacement for him at the back.
Jurgen Klopp’s side seem keen on taking young Liverpool centre-back Tiago Ilori on loan for the season, and the Reds’ willingness to send the Portuguese starlet to Dortmund will help push Hummels’ United move through.
The 25-year-old has also been strongly linked with Barcelona this summer, and has become widely regarded as one of the best central defenders in the game at the moment.
With Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand both leaving United this summer, this will go down as a major coup for manager Louis van Gaal if it goes through.
