Manchester United have been closely scouting Benfica midfielder Enzo Perez, and could make a move for the skilful Argentine when the summer transfer window opens, reports talkSPORT.
The 28-year-old has been brilliant during the Portuguese top flight this year, helping Benfica win the title with a series of controlled, domineering performances.
Perez could also be adding the Europa League to his silverware this term, as his Benfica outfit take on Sevilla in the final tonight.
As a result of his excellent form, Perez has been selected by Alejandro Sabella in Argentina’s preliminary 30 man World Cup squad, and he’ll be hoping that he survives the seven man cut to represent La Albiceleste in Brazil.
United are apparently readying a £16m bid for his services, although could have to battle Serie A champions Juventus for his signature.
Like many South American midfielders, Perez prides himself on his outstanding technical ability. He’s comfortable passing with either foot, which helps him dictate Benfica’s tempo in the middle of the park. He’s neither tall nor particularly strong, but has the skill to get himself between the ball and the opponent, meaning he rarely loses possession in the centre. Perez is also versatile, and has been used as a deep-lying anchoring midfielder, a more traditional central midfielder, or even in an advanced no.10 role this term.
During his 40 appearances in all competitions this season, he’s scored four times, assisted two more goals and picked up ten yellow cards. His pass completion is 85%, and he averages 1.8 tackles per match. Creatively, he likes to maximise his passing from deep, averaging 1.4 key passes per match.
United badly need central midfield improvements. Ryan Giggs is potentially retiring, while there are serious doubts over the long-term suitability of Tom Cleverley, Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher and even last summer’s big money signing Marouane Fellaini in the position.
As a result, the Red Devils will definitely enter the transfer market to sign a central midfielder, and Perez could provide a technically sound option, who wouldn’t necessarily break the bank either. The fact he’s more accustomed to a slower, more patient brand of football though, could be a risk.
