The Red Devils have also made significant progress in their efforts to bring in PSV winger Memphis Depay, and it has now emerged that a further £18m could be spent on Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij.
The Dutch international was a successful member of Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands squad at last summer’s World Cup, scoring in the win over Spain and looking a solid centre-back who could cut it at a top European club.
According to the Daily Express, de Vrij is now one of the club’s prime targets to come in and improve the back four, with van Gaal unconvinced by a number of his current options in that position, with Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans all proving inconsistent over the course of the campaign.
