Manchester United are close to sealing a stunning deal for Borussia Dortmund’s German central-defender Mats Hummels, with the Daily Express claiming that the two teams have agreed a £16m transfer fee.
United’s new manager Louis van Gaal is desperate for defensive reinforcements following the departures of long-serving duo Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdiand, who have left for Inter Milan and QPR respectively.
The Old Trafford club have been linked with both Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen and Feyenoord’s Dutch centre-half Stefan de Vrij, but 25-year-old World Cup winner Hummels is undoubtedly Van Gaal’s first-choice target.
Hummels has been with Dortmund since 2009, and is viewed as one of the most accomplished defenders in world football, with his reputation only enhanced by his performances in Brazil, where he scored crucial goals against both Portugal and France.
The former Bayern Munich player had been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona, but the Spanish giants have conceded defeat in their attempts to sign the German international, with the player now set for a move to Old Trafford.
The £16m deal is expected to be completed this week, with Dortmund having already moved to replace Hummels by signing Matthias Ginter from Freiburg.
