Defence has been an issue for the Red Devils ever since veterans Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic left over the summer and new manager Louis van Gaal is yet to truly address the problem.
Injuries have not helped matters, with Jonny Evans, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling all currently absent, leaving van Gaal with only young and inexperienced defenders.
Having signed the likes of Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao over the summer it is expected that the Dutchman will target defensive players in the New Year.
Borussia Dortmund skipper Mats Hummels and Aymeric Laporte of Athletic Bilbao are both believed to be targets, but Vlaar would act as a much cheaper option to that duo.
That is because the Netherlands international has entered the final year of his current contract and whilst Villa are holding out for £12m for the 29-year-old, they may be forced to accept less in January to avoid losing the player for free next summer.
Vlaar is expected to be keen on a reunion with van Gaal as well having worked with the 63-year-old for two years with the Dutch national team.
