Manchester United could trump Arsenal to the signing of Julian Draxler in the summer when the transfer window opens, reports the Daily Star.
The Gunners were heavily linked with a January move for the young German, and forward Lukas Podolski recently admitted his club were interested in the 20-year-old.
Draxler stayed with his Bundesliga club this winter however, and his continued his excellent form. He’s contributed seven assists in the league and Champions League combined, and weighed in with four goals as well. He currently starts on the left of a three pronged attack for Schalke, and prides himself on both his dribbling and his excellent vision. Because of his skill on the ball, he can either go past a player, or split open a defence with intricate through balls.
Despite the fact he currently plays wide, he has more than enough ability to eventually be moved to a move pivotal central ‘no.10’ position, although he would have to improve his finishing.
United have endured a miserable Premier League season, and the club’s chief executive Ed Woodward has promised David Moyes money to spend with the squad badly in need of a massive overhaul.
Draxler reportedly has a £37m release clause, but it seems like a slightly strange transfer target for United considering the fact that playmaker Juan Mata was signed in January for £37m, Wayne Rooney is now deployed in an attacking midfield role, and wonderkid Belgian Adnan Januzaj is ever improving. As well as this, United have Danny Welbeck who can play from the left, and Shinji Kagawa, who isn’t getting the chances his talent deserve.
If Moyes needs to strengthen anywhere, it’s in central midfield or in defence, but a move for Draxler would undoubtedly signal his intent nonetheless.
Arsenal though are unlikely to let United move for the player unopposed, and a titanic transfer battle could take place this summer if United follow up their interest with a bid.
