United will focus their attentions on outstanding German midfielder after a summer of frustration…
Manchester United will make an offer for Bayern Munich’s German midfield legend Bastian Schweinsteiger after a summer of frustration in the transfer market, reports The Mirror.
The 29-year-old has enjoyed a glittering career with the German champions, and was especially brilliant last season during Bayern’s Champions League win. He has won six league titles, is the reigning German footballer of the year, and is rightly regarded as one of the best midfielders of his generation.
United could make an ambitious move for Schweinsteiger though after being left frustrated in their pursuit of Spanish pair Thiago and Cesc Fabregas.
The former joined Bayern Munich earlier in the summer, while Barcelona are adamant that the latter is not for sale. Interestingly, Thiago’s arrival at Bayern could give United a slight hope of tying up a deal for Schweinsteiger. Thiago fits new manager Pep Guardiola’s tika-taka philosophy perfectly, and the Spanish boss may be inclined to move Schweinsteiger on while he can still get a sizeable transfer fee for him, giving Thiago more space and responsibility in the midfield.
Selling the midfielder however, would be hugely unpopular among Bayern fans, and put the Spanish boss under immediate scrutiny.
Scweinsteiger’s ability to sit deep and dictate play would give United the solid midfield base they arguably lack following Scholes’ retirement, Giggs’ advancing age and Fletcher’s injury problems.
If a possible £35m Fabregas is rejected as expected, United could offer up to £25m for Schweinsteiger by the end of the week.
