The Brazilian star sustained broken ribs during a United under-21 game earlier in the week, and he has been told that he cannot feature for the first team again this season.
Manager Louis Van Gaal has already been having doubts about the player, and is now said to be giving serious consideration into listening to offers for him over the summer, with the likes of São Paulo and Cruzeiro interested in snapping him up.
Rafael is also out of contract at the end of the season, and with his last chance to impress now gone, it is more than conceivable that his time at Old Trafford is well and truly up.
“It’s unbelievable,” said Van Gaal.
“He has broken his ribs so he shall not play any more this season for Manchester United.
“It’s very unfortunate.”
