Manchester United have reacted quickly to the recent news that Chelsea were ready to enter the race for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, with Portuguese outlet Zero Zero reporting that representatives from Old Trafford are meeting with his club to try and thrash out a deal for the talented young holding player.
United had been believed to be the most likely destination for the Angolan-born 22 year-old for most of the summer, but with news breaking that Chelsea were ready to step up their interest in Carvalho, it seems as though United have been forced into action if they want the Portuguese international to be the long-term partner to new signing Ander Herrera in a rejuvenated United midfield.
Despite playing the majority of his senior football in loan spells at Fatima and Cercle Brugge, Carvalho showed enough in his first full season in the first team at Sporting Lisbon to suggest that his position as one of Europe’s most highly rated young defensive midfielders was not an unreasonable billing for him to have been given.
It is unsurprising that Carvalho looks to be moving on, with Sporting having fallen behind Portuguese rivals Benfica and FC Porto in recent years when it comes to the financial clout needed to hold on to their better players for longer and also bring in the next generation of young stars.
