David Moyes wants to sign world-class winger Angel Di Maria in January…
Manchester United have earmarked Real Madrid’s flying Argentine winger Angel Di Maria as a priority January transfer target, reports The Daily Express.
The 25-year-old could be available for a bargain £18m, and would appease United fans disappointed by the club’s transfer dealings during the summer.
Where he could fit into United’s side:
Di Maria is left-footed, but like most wide men nowadays in 4-3-3 formations, plays on his opposite wing, and prefers to cut inside rather than beat his fullback down the flank.
For this reason he could play on the wide right or left of United’s current favoured 4-3-3 style.
The Argentine’s attributes:
His main skills are his fantastic close control and dribbling. Di Maria loves running at defenders, and has both technical ability and flair in abundance.
His right foot is weak, and he doesn’t have a high defensive work-rate, but superstars like Lionel Messi and Arjen Robben have proved this isn’t actually important as long as they are consistently creating chances and scoring goals.
Di Maria is very unselfish, and will always look to supply a teammate rather than go himself, but he does still posses a powerful left-foot shot if he’s in the right position.
Di Maria’s statistics:
This season, he hasn’t pulled up any trees in La Liga.
He’s scored once, and assisted another goal in his nine starts – but has been far more effective in the Champions League – scoring two and assisting four.
Di Maria has never scored more than nine in a season with the Spanish giants, but has assisted a mightily impressive 54 since arriving in 2010.
