Van Gaal to bring in experienced La Liga midfielder.
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal could be lining up something of a surprise move for Real Madrid and former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, according to CaughtOffside.
The Red Devils are expected to table an opening offer of around £14m for the Spaniard, who has been at the Bernabeu since leaving Anfield in the summer of 2009.
Alonso, 32, was part of Real Madrid’s Champions League winning squad last season, but may now be out of favour in the starting lineup after the Spanish giants paid £20m to sign German World Cup winner Toni Kroos from Bayern Munich.
With United having little success in attempts to sign the likes of Arturo Vidal, Fredy Guarin and Kevin Strootman, Alonso has now emerged as their latest target in that deep-lying midfield position.
This would no doubt cause some controversy among Liverpool fans, with Alonso proving a favourite with the Reds crowd during his time on Merseyside.
