The 26-year-old only joined the Spanish side earlier this year in a £9.5m deal, though he has long been linked with Premier League clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester City in the past.
United recently lost a 3-1 lead to finish on the wrong end of a 5-3 defeat to Leicester City, leading Louis van Gaal to ponder some big-name additions to come in and improve his back four.
Otamendi looks a good option for the Dutchman, having shown himself to be a solid performer throughout his career so far.
