Champions have been tracking ex-Wigan star for some time now.
Everton will fight tooth and nail to keep coveted defender Leighton Baines out of Manchester United’s clutches when the transfer window reopens for business at the end of the season, according to reports in the Daily Telegraph.
The newly-crowned Premier League champions announced Toffees head coach David Moyes as their choice to replace Sir Alex Ferguson in the Old Trafford dug-out on Thursday afternoon after the veteran United manager had decided to retire from all football earlier this week.
And since Moyes’s appointment in the north west, stories have been circulating that the Scot will make the highly-rated Everton full back his first signing as United boss this summer.
The England international, who very nearly moved to the top-flight giants last year, has a contract with Everton that runs until 30 May 2015 and so the club are under no obligation to sell the left back to United.
However, if the player agitates for a move, it may prove difficult to stop him from fulfilling his dream after six eye-catching years with the club, during which time he has featured in 244 matches and scoring 22 goals.
