With Chelsea’s saturation of attacking midfielders, United are keen to take the Spaniard off of Mourinho’s hands.
Manchester United have made an informal inquiry to Chelsea over the availability of Spanish creator Juan Mata.
ESPN report that Manchester United are keen on the player and obviously believe a deal to be within the realms of possibility.
With the news recently surfacing that Chelsea are set to steal Willian away from Tottenham, that would leave them with five players capable of playing in the central attacking midfield position – Oscar, Eden Hazard, Kevin de Bruyne, Juan Mata and the Brazilian newcomer himself. Even a masterful rotator such as Mourinho would struggle to keep such a deep squad happy – it is only logical that at least one player would have to make way.
It is as yet unclear as to whether or not Mata would be used in any potential swap deal for Wayne Rooney, who Chelsea are known to be hotly pursuing, but Mata moving to Old Trafford would both free up funds for the Blues and ease concerns of a potential lack of squad depth for David Moyes.
Despite Mata’s exceptional form last season, which saw him named the club’s Player of the Season as well as nominated for PFA Player’s Player of the Year, speculation surrounding his future arose from the moment Mourinho returned to the club.
Mourinho’s decision to leave Mata on the bench for Chelsea’s opening game of the season certainly did not help to quiet the rumours of dissonance between the two, either. With many still questioning the quality of Fernando Torres and Demba Ba, it could certainly be argued that exchanging Mata for Rooney would be beneficial for Chelsea.
