United set sights on more defensive signings.

Manchester United could solve their defensive crisis with a £25m bid for Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen, according to CaughtOffside.
The Red Devils are not the only club to show a strong interest in the versatile Belgian stopper this summer, with Barcelona linked with a £20m bid for him earlier in the transfer window, before they eventually signed Thomas Vermaelen from Arsenal for £15m.
Vertonghen would likely cost more if he were to move to a Premier League rival, and United are ready to test Spurs’ resolve for the player with a big-money offer.
Louis van Gaal is determined to make more signings in defence before the end of the transfer window, despite bringing in Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw so far this pre-season, and Vertonghen has become his top target after failure to sign the likes of Mats Hummels and Mehdi Benatia.
