French League not good enough according to ex-United star.
Eric Cantona has never been what you would term a shrinking violet.
The former Manchester United and Marseille star has hit the headlines this week after saying he would never go to watch a Ligue 1 match.
Cantona, who was banned for eight months in 1995 after jumping into the crowd and karate kicking a Crystal Palace fan, achieved great success as a striker at Old Trafford.
Aside from his prodigous football talent and 64 goals for Manchester United, he is also known for his bemusing ‘the seagulls follow the trawler’ quote, which he uttered in a press conference some time after the Crystal Palace incident.
According to RMC sport, Cantona has had this to say on the quality of French football.
“If a team plays in France one day plays like Barcelona, I’ll probably go see it,” Cantona said.
“But today, such a team does not exist.
“This is not a criticism but there are more interesting things to do than go to the French championship.
“I am passionate about the game. I always wonder what may interest me, teach me something or surprise me.
“When you go to the movies, you see a movie you may like, not a movie you will not like.
“I go to the theatre to see the plays that I like, to exhibitions that I like, and the football games that I like.”
