Former United defender believes Reds must hold on to Suarez.Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes Liverpool must keep hold of Luis Suarez this summer, despite the Uruguayan striker’s continued disciplinary problems.
Writing in his column for the Mail on Sunday, Ferdinand stated that Suarez is far too important a player for Brendan Rodgers to consider letting go, as his influence and ability on the pitch could be almost impossible to replace with another signing.
Barcelona are known to be interested in making a potentially big-money offer for the 27-year-old, who finished as the top scorer in the Premier League this season with a superb record of 31 goals in 33 games, and some have called for the Reds to let him go after his recent bite on Giorgio Chiellini saw him pick up a four-month ban, prematurely ending his World Cup campaign with Uruguay.
Ferdinand accepts that Suarez’s behaviour has to be looked at, but says that if he were Liverpool manager he would do everything he could to keep the player at Anfield this summer.
He said: “If I were the Liverpool manager there wouldn’t be a moment’s doubt about what to do next with Luis Suarez. I’d keep him.
“Purely and simply from a football perspective, what he does for you on the pitch – and I don’t mean biting people – makes him indispensable. And with the season Liverpool have ahead of them, that’s truer than ever.
“They had a brilliant 2013-14, pushing for the title … Although they didn’t win it, they were superb, with Suarez the single most significant reason for that.”
