In his column for the Sun, Ferdinand said that FIFA and UEFA now need to take a similarly no-nonsense approach to wiping racism out of the game entirely.
“It’s unfair on Chelsea that a small pack of idiots has dragged the club’s name through the mud,” he said.
“They have taken a hard stance so far and we will wait and see if they continue to take that approach.
“I don’t hold any grudge with Chelsea.
“Chelsea have acted really strongly. Hopefully they will carry it through and dish out the kind of punishments they have already spoken about. It was great that Jose Mourinho came out and addressed the issue.
“For years it’s been clear that Fifa and Uefa have shied away from doing what they needed to do.
“They have let football down, time and time again.”
