The former England international, who spent twelve years at Old Trafford in a glittering career with the Red Devils, is now with Queens Park Rangers but is likely to retire from the game in the summer.
Van Gaal wants to tap into Ferdinand’s success as a defender and see if he can pass on his wisdom to the club’s younger players coming through, with the likes of Phil Jones, Luke Shaw, Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair all youthful but playing a large number of games this season.
Van Gaal’s old club Ajax have a history of recruiting former players to help bring through the next generation, and it now looks like United could go down a similar route.
