Rumours were rife that United were the unknown second interested club.
After Tottenham Hotspur revealed that a second club along with Real Madrid had made a bid for Gareth Bale, speculation arose that it was Manchester United.
The Premier League champions have yet to make a big name signing this summer and it was thought Bale would act as the perfect acquisition to ease new manager David Moyes into the job.
If the English champions do want the Spurs star it will cost £125m.
However, following United’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea on Monday night, the Scot admitted that the Red Devils had not made a bid for the Welshman, but were interested in the best players available.
“I said at the start that Manchester United will always be interested in the best players and we’ll always be looking to try and improve the team,” Moyes told Sky Sports.
“The owners have given me every opportunity to get who I want so we’ll continue to look for those players. It’s been tough in this window but we’re always looking at the best players.”
Yet despite this seeming to be promising for the Old Trafford faithful, when asked directly whether United were the other club to bid for Bale the simple reply from the 50-year-old was ‘no.’
There is speculation that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has fabricated this second bid in order to drive an even harder bargain with Madrid.
Levy is well known for getting the absolute most of of transfer dealings, as has been shown by Luka Modric and Dimitar Berbatov’s sales to Los Blancos and United respectively.
