The 25-year-old is currently on loan at Villa Park and manager Paul Lambert has been so impressed with his form that he wants to ensure Cleverley stays at the club for the foreseeable future.
The Englishman’s current contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of this season, but in a bid to make sure the midfield ace joins his side Lambert wants to tie up a deal in the New Year.
It’s widely believed that Cleverley’s career at United has now ended, with the England international gradually falling down the pecking order before Louis van Gaal shipped him out.
The Villa loanee was heavily criticised during David Moyes’ ill-fated 11 months in charge of the Red Devils and it looks highly unlikely he would be offered a new contract by the 13-time Premier League champions.
