The reigning Portuguese champions value the Argentina international at around £25m and although Los Che have sent scouts to watch Perez in action they cannot afford his fee.
This leaves the Red Devils as the favourites to land the 28-year-old with manager Louis van Gaal a known admirer of the South American.
Perez has been in impressive form for Benfica in recent times and helped them break FC Porto’s stranglehold on the Primeira Liga title last season, as well as reaching the Europa League final for the second year running.
With concerns over the prolonged capabilities of Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher in central midfield van Gaal is keen to find alternatives to the veterans in the middle of the park.
AS Roma star Kevin Strootman is also being targeted, although there are concerns at Old Trafford about whether the Netherlands international has sufficiently recovered from a cruciate ligament injury sustained last year.
