The Red Devils are prepared to swap the midfielder for Subotic.
Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United are preparing a deal that will see Shinji Kagawa return to the Westfalenstadion and Neven Subotic go the other way, according to the Daily Star.
The 24-year-old has been unsettled at Old Trafford ever since making the transfer to the Premier League in the summer of 2012 – with just 30 appearances in all competitions since.
Kagawa was something of a cult icon at Dortmund, helping the club to successive Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012, and would be welcomed back at the club.
United do not want to let their attacking midfielder leave however unless they get something out of the deal and Subotic is looking like an attractive makeweight for the Red Devils.
The Premier League champions looked into the possibility of signing defensive support this summer – with Benfica’s Ezequiel Garay looking the most likely – but in the end did not recruit anyone at the back; other than Uruguay under-20 international Guillermo Varela.
However, with Rio Ferdinand out of sorts and Chris Smalling not becoming the dominant defender United were hoping for, Subotic would be a welcome acquisition.
The Croatian has been with Dortmund for a little over five years and has formed a superb central partnership with Mats Hummels.
But both Ferdinand and captain Nemanja Vidic are now in their 30s and manager David Moyes could well be looking to the future for the club.
