Van Gaal is an admirer pf the France international and will offer outcast striker Javier Hernandez to the Italians in an attempt to convince them to part with the centre-back.
Mexico international Hernandez is currently on loan at Real Madrid, and the Red Devils boss has no room for the striker in next season’s plans.
Van Gaal wants to reinforce his defensive options and has targeted the former Valencia star as the ideal man to fill the gap.
Milan have this week parted with Fernando Torres, and though Alessio Cerci is expected to link up with the club in the coming weeks, boss Filippo Inzaghi is still keen to bolster his attacking options.
