Danny Welbeck, Antonio Valencia and Tom Cleverley starred for Manchester United as Aston Villa were thrashed at their home ground of Villa Park. Read player ratings here.
David De Gea: 7/10
Had little to do, but saved every shot that came at him. David De Gea’s command of his area is improving rapidly too.
Rafael: 7/10
Got forward well, and was untroubled at the back. The Brazilian’s partnership with Antonio Valencia was key today.
Patrice Evra: 7/10
Did not contribute as much in attack in recent seasons, but shackled Marc Albrighton well.
Phil Jones: 7/10
Performed solidly in his audition at centre back – a position he deems to be his best.
Jonny Evans: 7/10
Took on the mantle of senior partner in the central defensive pairing and led his more junior colleague well.
Tom Cleverley: 8/10
One of his very best games in a Manchester United shirt. Cleverley completed 94% of his tackles, and contributed well in attack.
Ryan Giggs: 7/10
Helped control possession as Aston Villa failed to close down the Manchester United midfield without Fabian Delph.
Antonio Valencia: 8/10
Had a riot on the right wing, and was able to beat his man time and time again. Provided the cross for Danny Welbeck’s second goal.
Adnan Januzaj: 7/10
Showed good skill and movement to get into central attacking areas, but was often outmuscled and needs to improve upper body strength before he can fulfil his potential.
Wayne Rooney: 7/10
An intelligent performance. Rooney played almost as a central midfielder at times, before breaking further forward at pace to help Manchester United counters.
Danny Welbeck: 8/10
Scored twice in Robin Van Persie’s absence, showing just what he can do when selected in his primary position.
Substitutes:
Darren Fletcher: 7/10
Played well on his first appearance in a year, showing composure in passing and ambition going forward.
Ashley Young: 6/10
Booed by both sets of fans coming on, Young was tidy but struggled with the weight of his passing.
Wilfried Zaha: 6/10
Had little time to make an impression.
