Manchester United played a highly professional match against West Ham United, with Phil Jones, Shinji Kagawa, Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney shining. Read player ratings here:
David De Gea – 7/10
Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea handled everything West Ham threw at him, and his increasing comfort with aerial bombardment illustrates why he has reportedly been offered an extended stay at Old Trafford.
De Gea’s kicking was also highly impressive, regularly finding his team-mates in promising positions.
Michael Carrick – 7/10
David Moyes’ biggest gamble of the game was to play Michael Carrick at centre back, but the England international played well in his nominative position, using his anticipation to intercept play where possible, and distributing the ball well from the back.
Phil Jones – 8/10
Phil Jones has long suffered from being something of a jack of all trades and master of none, but his last two performances at centre back suggest that may be where he settles.
The England utility man dealt extremely well with the physical threat West Ham provided through Andy Carroll and Mohamed Diame, and helped keep the Hammers generally quite quiet throughout.
Rafael – 7/10
Booked seemingly for dissent in the first half, and treaded a fine line thereafter, but Rafael got forward well throughout and combined well with the rest of the team.
Alex Buttner – 7/10
For a player highlighted before the game as a potential weak link in the Man Utd side, Buttner did well, showing far more discipline in his movement than he has previously been known for.
