Moyes will be wanting a win after a hammering by City.
It’s the biggest tie of the League Cup third round as Manchester United host fierce rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford.
The two sides have already met this season in the Premier League, when the Reds ran out 1-0 winners and United manager David Moyes will be hoping for a reversal in fortunes.
The Scot has been left licking his wounds after an unwelcome introduction to life at the top with a 4-1 hammering at the hands of Manchester City at the weekend.
A win against the Merseyside club is therefore a must to build morale and despite the reputation of this competition, Moyes has promised to field a strong side.
With that in mind this is how fanatix thinks the 50-year-old will line-up the Red Devils.
GK – Amos: First choice David De Gea is expected to be given a rest ahead of an arduous season and young talent Amos is preferred to the unreliable Andres Lindegaard.
RB – Rafael: This tie should be the perfect opportunity to introduce the Brazilian back to first team football after a lengthy injury – may not play the full 90 minutes though.
LB – Fabio: Rafael’s twin brother deputised at right-back in the absence of the 23-year-old’s sibling against Crystal Palace in the league and could well get another chance if Patrice Evra is rested.
CB – Evans: Another who has had fitness concerns of late, although the Northern Irishman is expected to be ready to play in this clash and will provide some strength in defence.
CB – Vidic: It’s a risk fielding the captain just three days after the City defeat due to the Serb’s injury problems in the past, but Vidic is less of a risk than 34-year-old Rio Ferdinand.
CM – Cleverley: The Englishman appears to be a favourite of Moyes and with Marouane Fellaini cup-tied, should get the nod ahead of Anderson.
CM – Carrick: Another who is lilkely to be fielded to add experience, against what is expected to be a strong side fielded by opposition manager Brendan Rogders.
RM – Zaha: Although the 20-year-old is yet to play a competitive match since the Community Shield, this could well be Zaha’s opportunity; but it will be a close run thing with Nani.
LM – Kagawa: The attacking midfielder should get another chance to prove himself to Moyes after starting their Champions League opener against Bayer Leverkusen.
ST – Rooney: With the 27-year-old in such great form (four goals in the last three matches) the boss could start the forward with a hope that Rooney decides the match early and then can be taken off.
ST – Hernandez: It’s likely to be a rare start for the striker, especially in the absence of Robin Van Persie and a good performance could catch the eye of Moyes for future encounters.
