The Red Devils are closing in on di Maria.
Real Madrid midfielder Angel di Maria could be on his way to Manchester United as the 13-time Premier League winners prepare a £55m bid for the South American, according to the Daily Express.
Di Maria’s future at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu has been plunged into doubt following the summer arrival of both Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez, from Bayern Munich and AS Monaco respectively.
Paris Saint-Germain were thought to be leading the chase for the Argentina international, but announced on Thursday that the 26-year-old was too expensive for them following the £40m signing of David Luiz from Chelsea.
This has left the Red Devils as the favourites to land di Maria, as they look for a marquee signing for new manager Louis van Gaal.
It’s understood that the club would be willing to offer the Argentine a five-year contract with wages of £120,000-a-week in order to tempt him to Old Trafford.
However, United’s lack of Champions League football for the next season will work against them when trying to sign di Maria.
So far this summer they have spent £56m on new players with Ander Herrera arriving from Athletic Bilbao for £29m and Luke Shaw signed from Southampton for £27m.
Van Gaal is also understood to be interested in Fiorentina’s Juan Cuadrado and Arturo Vidal of Juventus.
