Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane is a potential summer target for Sir Alex Ferguson.
Manchester United are preparing an audacious swoop for Real Madrid’s teenage sensation Raphael Varane this summer, reports the Daily Star.
It would be the second time the Red Devils have tried to lure the 19-year-old defender to Manchester after first trying to sign the Frenchman from Lens in 2011.
However, Varane chose Madrid then but Sir Alex Ferguson is not giving up the chase for the centre-back as he prepares to activate a release clause in youngster’s contract – reported to be around £26million.
This could be seen to be a sound investment by United if Varane could be lured away from the Santiago Bernabeu, as he has become a Real Madrid first-team regular since his move to Spain.
Ferguson knows this only too well as the France international played in both legs of Madrid’s last-16 defeat of Manchester United in this season’s Champions League.
Varane is under contract in the Spanish capital until 2017 but the La Liga champions are set to go into contract talks with their young star to lengthen that deal until 2019 and significantly increase his release clause.
The teenager has played 27 times for Real this season, starting an impressive 24 of those games and scoring four goals.
As well as the dismissal of United Varane has been instrumental in his side’s progression to the Champions League semi final after helping knock out Galatasaray.
Current United defenders Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic are both in their 30s and Ferguson may be looking for one of them to make way for the talented Frenchman.
